The polyester backing for both the anti-slip base and tatami top surface are stronger than the cotton backing that most non IJF Approved mats use, that are often referred to as IJF Type or IJF Contest Judo Mats with a disclaimer somewhere in the small print that they are not IJF Approved – always read the small print!

We have two types of IJF Approved Tatami Judo Mats – Pro Contest and Olympic.
Both have the same base and top surface, but the Pro Contest has (230kg/m3 = 14lb) foam and the Olympic has a denser foam (270kg/m3 = 17lb), making it a very hard faster mat often used for international senior championships and tournaments.

The foam used in IJF Approved Tatami Judo Mats is more homogeneous (even throughout) than other models of Judo Mats, which is sometimes noticeable over a large area. It creates a flatter surface as well as the same feel of hardness over the whole area that the mats make. Very slight differences are more noticeable by international judoka, and are not preferred at this higher level of Judo.

4 reviews for IJF Approved Tatami Judo Mats

  1. 5 out of 5

We purchased 82 mats (specifications 2m x 1m x 40mm) 3 years ago and they were economically priced, high quality and durable. As our club grew we decided to expand our matted area to accommodate our growing gym community so we purchased 133 mats over a year ago with the utmost confidence. John from MartialArtsMats was very informative and helpful during the entire process. The mats are holding up brilliantly despite the fact we now have 100+ classes a week and over 800 members. We couldn’t be happier and our members couldn’t be safer!

We also bought wall padding, rubber matting and a range of strength and fitness equipment which all met our expectations too.

  2. 5 out of 5

2.5 Yrs on and mats are still in great condition and very happy with them. Move to a new dojo with a poor floor, but the grip bases are great – minimal movement.

  3. 5 out of 5

The mats are fantastic. Particularly impressed with how grippy they are. With our previous mats we always struggled with mat-slide and had to waste training time to rearrange mats to remove gaps or risk injury. With these mats we can put them out at the start and they’re still in place at the end of a two hour session. Seem durable so far – they’ve been trained on for approx 16 hours a week for 9 months now and have retained their initial condition. We share these mats with the aikido and judo clubs and they are also very happy.

  4. 5 out of 5

These mats are perfect for our needs at Southampton Jitsu Club. They have the right hardness and the bases are definitely less slippy than our last set, we are really pleased. I’ll let you know in a decade or so if they have lasted as long as the last lot!
